Welcome to 6th-grade Advanced Language Arts' class!  One that encompasses all things related to Reading, Grammar, Writing, Spelling, Speaking, and Listening.

Our academic standards include:

 

Speaking and Listening ~ effectively in a variety of situations, including but not limited to, responses to reading and writing

 

Reading and Writing ~ developing and applying effective communication skills through speaking and active listening to create individual and group projects and presentations; reading independently for a variety of purposes and for extended periods of time, select appropriate texts for specific purposes

 

Fluency ~ recognizing high-frequency words and reading grade-level texts smoothly and accurately with expression that connotes comprehension

 

Reading ~ reading and comprehending increasingly complex literary and informational text

 

Writing ~ developing and strengthening writing by engaging in a recursive process that includes planning, prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing; writing for a variety of purposes and audiences in all modes

 

Critical Reading and Writing ~ comprehending, interpreting, evaluating, and responding to a variety of complex texts of all literary and informational genres from a variety of historical, cultural, ethnic, and global perspectives

 

Vocabulary ~ expanding academic, domain-appropriate, grade-level vocabularies through reading, word study, and class discussion; applying this knowledge of vocabularies to communicate in their writing

 

Language ~ applying knowledge of grammar and rhetorical style to analyze and evaluate a variety of texts and demonstrate command of Standard English grammar, mechanics, and usage through writing and other modes of communication

 

Research ~ engaging in inquiry and comprehending, evaluating, and synthesizing resources to acquire and refine knowledge, as well as summarize and paraphrase, integrate evidence and cite sources to create reports, projects, papers, texts, and presentations for multiple purposes

 

Multimodal Literacy ~ evaluating written, oral, visual, and digital texts in order to draw conclusions and analyze arguments; creating multimodal texts to communicate knowledge and develop arguments
