Parents and Guardians,

The partnership between student, home and school is crucial to your child’s success. A critical piece to this partnership is providing opportunities for engagement with technology at the highest level while maintaining a digitally secure environment when students are at school. With the expansion of Chromebooks to the 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade centers, teachers and students are using Google Classroom, but haven’t been able to use it to its fullest capacity because students did not have email turned on in their G-Suite accounts.

After extensive teacher feedback and a review of the national ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) standards in the K-12 environment, we are excited to inform you that we will be turning on the email feature in your student’s G-Suite account in what is called a “walled garden” setup. This means that 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students will have email turned on for their accounts, but will only be able to send or receive emails from the students and teachers within their school site. This will allow our teachers to begin the process of teaching students email etiquette, digital citizenship, and reinforce the ISTE standards starting at an earlier grade. Additionally, turning on email in a walled garden set up will allow students to receive submission receipts for any work turned in through Google Classroom, Google Form Quizzes, or other online curricular sources.

Email is a wonderful learning and communication tool and it is important that students understand how to use it effectively and safely. Therefore, before activating this feature, each grade center will be doing a digital citizenship lesson about appropriate email use for all students.

We are excited about this opportunity for our students. If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Kira Kelsey, Principal
Owasso Sixth Grade Center
